Old Forge and Walt’s

Summer is nearly here, and trip planning has begun in earnest around here. I’m trying to make sure that a long weekend is kept aside for a trip to Old Forge. We used to go up there every summer when my daughter was younger to visit Enchanted Forest and Water Safari (where the fun never stops).

We’d stay right in the village at The Forge Motel, which is very convenient to the amusement park and to the village shops and restaurants.

And when I say restaurants, the first place to come to mind for me is Walt’s Diner. It’s the perfect place to get started with a great breakfast. Everything you’d want is available, and it’s done well and quickly.

Enjoy breakfast before checking out good old Paul Bunyan, the giant-sized sculpture that greets you at Enchanted Forest, or before you begin your ascent of nearby Bald Mountain, which provides great views of the Adirondacks. We’ve also rented a pontoon boat and traveled through the Fulton Chain of Lakes, a terrific way to spend the day as you motor through a series of 13 connected lakes.

Do something one day, and then something else the next. Just remember to start at Walt’s whatever is on the day’s agenda.

See a map of Walt’s Diner here.

  1. We love Walt’s. Walt’s is truly a breakfast and lunch HOT SPOT! You dont know what your missing. I have heard good and bad about dinners. Bad is that there are too many families at night with loud kids running around. BUT still homemade food and GREAT portions.

  2. Never ate breakfast at Walt’s, but dinner four times over about six years. First and third times were good, second and fourth not so good. May never go back.

    • sorry to hear that. i’ve been lucky at walt’s each time, with mainly breakfasts and lunches. for dinner we go next door to frankie’s or the old mill.
