Food for thought: What happens at U.S. Air Force installation south of Oneida?

This is a U.S. Air Force installation, so the sign says, just west of Route 46 on Burleson Road.

This is a U.S. Air Force installation just west of Route 46.

Now, I’m not saying that Oneida, N.Y., is anything like Roswell, N.M. Not saying that at all.

I am saying it is odd that there is a  U.S. Air Force “installation” just south of the city on Burleson Road – Peterboro Road, west of Route 46. The installation includes a gate with a clearly marked WARNING message,  a short driveway, a red and white Lego-like contraption, and a low-slung building. That seems to be it.

I drive by the installation every now and again as I take the back roads to enjoy the views of CNY, usually as I am coming back from Wampsville and Route 5. It seems out of place up there on the hill.

Does  it have anything to do with the former Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome?  Should we alert Jody Foster (Contact) or Richard Dreyfus (Close Encounters) or Mel Gibson (Signs)?

I am sure there is a perfectly good explanation for what this installation does and why it’s there. I just don’t know it and Google isn’t helping me find it. Does anybody out there know? If so, please share via comments below and help quell my insatiable curiousity and let me get back to writing about food again!

The picture is the front gate at Stockbridge Test Site. It is part of the Air Force Research Lab at Griffiss Business Park.
